The Weight of a Ribbon

Ribbons have appeared in the world for nearly as long as fabrics and are often used for decoration. The ribbon is designed much in the same way as fabrics and ribbons used to be woven on loams as well. In the Middle Ages peddlers sold exotic ribbons and ribbons have always held symbolic meaning. In the 16th century Parliament attempted to make it so that only nobility were allowed to wear ribbons and certain orders of merit still are designated a ribbon color.

During the French Revolution, French expatriates wore crimson ribbons around their neck (choker-style) in symbolic memoriam to those who perished by guillotine.
The yellow ribbon has in recent history always symbolized waiting for loved ones to return home from war.
Who can not remember a time when the red ribbon symbolized AIDS awareness (remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer refused to wear his AIDS ribbon)?
Just an interesting thought with the recent trends of ribbon necklaces, headbands, and other accessories, might we be unconsciously saying more than we know?
