An Egg's Tale

A little comic-strip-esque sketch I came up with during my Computers class when I should have been paying attention.

There once was a little country egg. She didn't have a lot, but she was content with what she had.

One day, she was snatched away from her quiet country existence and the next thing she knew...

She was surrounded by sophisticated city-folk and they made it clear that she didn't fit in. She felt plain and lonely and she knew things had to change.

And change she did, trading in her plaid for mink and jeans for chiffon. But she was now stood out in a different way and one day she was snatched again.

And no one ever heard from her after that day. Some thought she had been discovered and now stalked the runways, but we'll never know for sure.

Halloween Film Pick

My film pick for Halloween is not a classic choice (Poltergeist, Casper, Scream, etc) but rather a real classic, featuring Veronica Lake. "I Married a Witch" tells the story of a 1942 politician (Fredrich March) who becomes haunted by a witch (Veronica Lake) who was burned by his ancestor. Her love potion goes awry in a classic tale of everyone loving the wrong person. What could be better on Halloween than a little Veronica Lake and witchcraft?
I can really buy Veronica Lake as a witch, can't you? She looks drop-dead gorgeous in her pictures, but also a little conniving and dangerous.

Exhaustion

I do not think I am getting enough sleep lately. The signs: I'm always tired and more importantly I put my skirt on upside down this morning. What's next? Wearing my shoes on the wrong feet? Honestly if a girl is too tired to dress herself she should not be required to attend class.

Also, I am asking for some advice: if you are wearing a knit fitted skirt and tights should you wear a slip or no slip? Will the slip cause the skirt to rise up and no slip will cause friction with the tights and make it stay in place? Anyone know which is better?

Clothes vs. Fashion

I was surprised so many people have been blogging about the Hills episode, or perhaps what will now be called Lauren's Marc Jacobs fiasco." I think it really strikes a chord, because those who are interested in fashion (and aren't born wealthy and don't have reality tv phenom to back a clothing line) respect designers and understand that fashion is work. Design takes talent and liking clothes is not the same as liking fashion.

This to me is a key idea: liking clothes and liking fashion. A girl who likes clothes, likes shopping (probably at the mall) and maybe a few big designer names because everyone knows them and anyone with style will like them. A girl who likes fashion, takes risks, when she can't afford the designs she wants she makes them or thrifts something reminiscent--her friends and family might not understand her fashion choices. The latter girl is more likely to make fashion "mistakes" and wear sometimes unflattering items.
You might be able to tell I don't have a lot of respect for girls who like clothes, mostly because I feel some of them fail to make the distinction between clothes and fashion. I am even perhaps using fashion incorrectly, perhaps I mean style--that external reflection of yourself expressed artistically and limitlessly through your clothes, hair, shoes, etc.
I don't know what I would do if I got to meet Marc Jacobs, several thoughts come to mind (faint, scream, babble, freeze), but I do know if I was sitting on my oh-so-stylish bottom, I would get off it.

Childish Tirade

Fair warning: I am about to launch into a tirade about a very shallow show.

Last night on "The Hills" Lauren was given the opportunity to meet Marc Jacobs (of whom she is apparently a fan). A third party introduces them and Marc walked across the room to where Lauren was seated, she deigned to reach out her hand, greet him and then turned her head away while he was still speaking. Um, excuse me, rude much? Let's say you are given the opportunity to meet your favorite designer (Lacroix, please) and you are seated at the time, do you not have the decency to rise to your feet and greet him/her and give him/her your full attention?
Designers aside, isn't this just common courtesy for anyone? I would be insulted if I was introduced to someone (formally) and they not only remained seated, but turned their face's away while I was mid-sentence. A clear sign that money can not buy class, but should probably buy manners lessons. I'd hate to see how she treats designers she dislikes.
Does anyone else find this rude, or am I extreme? Tirade over.
In other news, my pink glitter nail polish takes me back to childhood.

Breaking Ground

I awoke today to the first frost of the season (here, at least). While this magical moment might not be as momentous as the first snow of the season, it still clearly delineates an end to one season and a beginning of another. Soon it will be time to pull out the boots and heavy winter coat, already I can enjoy the scarves and hats the cool weather gives me the opportunity to don. Speaking of hats...

Cold Decadence

The subject of Faberge eggs might be better suited for the Easter season, but perhaps the change in weather has my mind on colder lands (Russia) and with Christmas also progressing forward the decadence of the giving season also takes my mind to these little decadent orbs of luxury. There were only sixty-eight eggs made by Peter Carl Faberge and fifty-four were made for tsars. Through the turmoil of the past eight eggs were lost and remain missing.

But truly, what would be a better gift at any season, than a rich egg with a surprise inside? Perhaps, these Kinder Eggs (a German treat) will provide a cheaper alternative. Much like the Russian Faberge eggs and Russian nesting dolls, these eggs of delightful and dynamic. A creamy milk chocolate shell covers a hollow white chocolate egg, break it open and find a little plastic container with a toy (better toys than McDonald's happy meals can provide).

Begs the question, chocolate or diamonds, which is a better gift for women?

Doll-Face

Back from the Halloween Art Party. I had a blast, there was a lot of cool people, so despite not being an Art major (as the party was intended for), I enjoyed myself. The costume of the evening was definitely the giant banana, but I think my portrayal of a doll was very accurate. I even practiced the body language and facial expressions. What do you think?

Dinner Exclusive

Tonight three of my dear friends made the venture across town to an exclusive German dinner at my family's house. To get there involved a little car drama. At one point three of us were sitting in the car that refused to start talking to three different males on the phone in hopes of help. Later, we all huddled under my umbrella while looking dubiously under the hood and laughing as we jump-started the finicky vehicle. After our mis-start we arrived late to delicious spaetzel, schnitzel, and red cabbage. For dessert there was a sampling of three different German gingerbread, all delicious.
These pictures taken of me outside come courtesy of my friend, Nicole. Can you see the awkwardness on my face? I'm always self-conscious of having my picture taken, the only time I lose my camera-shy is when I wield the camera, even if it is with a timer as I usually do.

Walk with me...

One of my favorite fashion photographers is Tim Walker. His photographs always seem to add a touch of pure whimsy, as if he is a man with a great imagination and a good sense of humor. In the beginning he studied under Richard Avedon, today he has contributed to Vogue, W, and Harper's Bazaar and has shot campaigns for Kate Spade, Barneys, and Gap (to name a few names.) More of his pictures can be found here.

Foodies Delight

My latest love (if you weren't able to tell from my pumpkin post) is food blogs. They run the gamut from people visiting restaurants, to chefs posting their own recipes, to entire blogs devoted to candy. In my online perusing I stumbled across these delightful cupcakes from Vegan Yum Yum (see there was a connection to fashion in there).

Division of Labor

Woke up bright and early to get to work at 7:00am. I was working with another girl stocking shelves when three of our managers decided to stop by. They started crowding around in the store, talking, joking, and wholly ignoring us. I told the other girl I felt a bit like a serf. They spent half an hour just standing around chatting at each other, while we worked stocking shelves, pricing items, lifting carts, etc. Couldn't they have had their "strategic planning" session elsewhere?
My favorite part of this outfit is definitely my elephant print wrist cuff. I made it from a tie I found in a thrift store. The print is the most charming thing I have ever seen.

Rainy Days are in my Head and in my Heart

It's been drizzling steadily for a couple of days now. I don't mind the weather too badly though, seeing as it only serves to remind me of the three years my family lived in Puyallup, Washington. The year we moved there set a new record of raining over 100 days straight without stop.

Just because the weather is gloomy though, doesn't mean the style stops.

My navy beret might be from an old school uniform, but it never ceases to make me feel like Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde. Last time I wore it I was assassinated...

I Dream of Pumpkin

My Internet is down, so now I am forced to run to a Computer Lab anytime I wish to accomplish something.

Meanwhile all I can think about is great pumpkin eats--pumpkin ice cream, bread, muffins, not to mention the savory stews, or baked seeds. Yum! Recipes here.

The Spoils

Shopping is surely marvelous. I am now the proud owner of new: pair of shoes, skirt, vest, dress, and shrunken sweater. So technically the shrunken sweater and vest aren't shrunken they're stolen from the little boys' department, but that will be our little secret. The total haul cost me just under $30, so I'm excited about that as well. Test-driving the new items.
