Grandma's A Superhero

A friend shared this story with me about a week ago and it was far too good to keep to myself; the images will make you smile, but the story is even sweeter. When French photographer Sacha Goldberger heard his grandmother was feeling lonely and depressed he hatched a scheme to cheer her up. He suggested she dress up in costumes while he photographed her in unusual settings and locations; she reluctantly agreed, but couldn't stop smiling once they started.
His grandmother (Fredricka) was a bit of a superhero; during World War II she saved the lives of 10 Jewish she knew. Sacha characterizes his grandmother as having incredible strength, but also an amazing sense of humor. Both are evident in the photographic series titled "Mamika" which depicts Fredricka as a unique superhero. The story is becoming a viral hit. Fredricka now has her own Myspace page and interacts with new "fans" every day who love her story and want her to adopt them. Sacha reports that after the set his grandmother hasn't given a hint of depression. Her image has also become an inspiration to others.
The story and photographs that result definitely make me smile. It is also a nice reminder of the usefulness of creativity. So often it seems that those who focus on creative fields are told their work has less merit or benefit to society than others. However, while not every act of photography is as "helpful" as perhaps nursing, there is a lot of good that can result from creative acts--and benefits beyond the artist...

Tricks Up My Sleeves

I'm certain everyone reading this blog by now knows my love for tights...it's really a practical love: I want to wear dresses and legs get cold without a layer, tights are the solution to cold limbs in fall and winter. As long as I am wearing tights I do enjoy finding interesting ones. Anyway, as I mentioned previously I received a sweet package of tights from Tabio and one of my favorites is this garter border pair. They're very basic-looking when I wear most of my dresses (because usually my hems are long enough to hide the details), but with a mini you get the peak of sheerness and stripes...the stripes actually remind me of sports socks.

Practicing My Stink Eye

I adore the artwork from Pop Pop Portraits for their detailed little outfits and how many of the characters remind me of people I know. What really slays me about the illustrations though are the sweet descriptions listed with each, like this one: "Edie is always being told she's a girly girl...sweet, lovely, adorable and even precious! Trying to shake off that image Edie went out and bought a tiger print clutch bag thinking it will make her look a bit more fierce. She's also been practicing "the stink eye" but I don't think she's quite got it!" That could be a description of me and how I also would (ineffectually) attempt to make people see me differently. With the reasonable prices in her shop as well, I'm sorely tempted to buy an easy half dozen and hang the whole gang together on my wall...

Nothing To Wear But Clothes, To Keep One From Going Nude

I really don't own a lot of nude/blush tone clothing, but I absolutely love this blouse I received from Nina of Family Affairs when I visited her in September. It's the perfect layering piece and so neutral it goes with absolutely everything. When I put together this outfit I couldn't help wondering what the blouse would look like with a similarly toned skirt. I'll have to stay on the look-out for something suitable. Head-to-toe nude tones would be a total departure for me, but I do like to experiment a bit style-wise.

This outfit came together slowly, even laboriously, but ultimately I'm happy with the outcome. Every time I force myself into a skirt and shirt combination I convince myself I'm going to wear more separates...then laziness ensues and I merely reach for the nearest dress...

Great Waves Looked Over Others Coming In

The waves have been rather more wild and untamed than usual down by the shore lately. I've found myself trotting into the wake more than once to chase down a purse that was getting swept out to sea (thankfully I never can seem to remember to carry my phone, so nothing was damaged). The crashing waves certainly made for some good pictures though and I decided to share a few "accidental" gifs which show some of the sea's energy on this day. I have a hard time making gifs just showing the wind or the waves because I tend to move (awkwardly) around in the picture-taking process.

This dress I received from Lulu*s might be my perfect little black dress. It's velvet, which I have repeatedly stated that I love, but what I really like about it is the shape. It skims the figure without being clingy and doesn't need a belt or anything else to make it look nice. I think it's going to be the perfect dress to reach for when I don't know what I want to wear and don't want to make a lot of effort.

Black Swan

I haven't seen The Black Swan yet so I can hardly recommend it, however I am definitely looking forward to seeing it. As a purist I wish films about dancers starred actual dancers, but this film seems as if it will focus more on the psychological toll of dancing rather than the technical skills...Regardless, if there was anything that could really get me excited for this film it would be these art deco inspired movie posters. These are limited edition international posters, so sadly most of us (especially in the States) will be seeing the Natalie Portman version wherever we go. The first and second ones I would hang on my wall without having seen or liked the film.

Detail Of The Week: Tilly Bloom Brooches

After seeing other bloggers breathe new life into vintage brooches I've been thinking about adding some to my style as well. My hunt for a few good brooches ended when I found Tilly Bloom. Her arty, graphic accessory line is inspired by the Victorian Era, scifi, surrealism, eyes, folktales, and a number of other eclectic passions that lend themselves well to unique, quirky jewelry. The pieces are a fascinating mash-up; fantastical panthers with the wings of butterflies, or flowers blooming with vintage faces inspired by 'The Garden of Live Flowers' in Alice Through The Looking Glass are brought to life as necklaces and earrings.

I just received the Photographer Brooch and Odette Brooch. They're made of sturdy plastic with a metal pin, and are very shiny and lightweight. I really enjoy how personal and eccentric they are, but the basic black and white palette means they can be easily styled with a number of different looks.

Empty Mailbox

Ever since I saw this illustration by Caitlin Shearer for Ballad Of, I've been contemplating splurging on that magazine (shipping charges to the States are painful). I'm just such a fan of Caitlin's illustrations and I love the concept of this edition: empty mail boxes. There's just something so romantic about letter-writing. I'm certainly thrilled whenever my friends write me and I'm planning on investing in a typewriter.

Saturday Remix

One of my favorite dresses to remix this year has been this one from Modcloth; which was the one given to me when Modcloth named me their blogger of the month. It's also cool because I know of a couple of other bloggers who bought it and wear it very well. It's a very flexible dress in terms of shape and palette. I was initially afraid it would wash me out (as a pale person I tend to avoid "flesh tones" and "nudes"), but it actually looks decent against my death-warmed-up skin...Like all my remixes, these are just a few ways I've worn it--there are many more outfits featuring it in the archives I could feature here.
