Shaun Kardinal adds modern marvel to vintage lithographs through colorful and quirky embroidery. Kardinal states the project grew out of a desire to engage his hands and produce work without having to consider artist statements. With that being the purpose behind the pieces I won't attempt to wax eloquent or read too deeply into the threaded additions. Instead, I'll just say that I enjoy the finished pieces and think that the added textural dimension is quite nice.

This Flickr group called Looking Into The Past was such a fun discovery. The group focus is to feature modern photographs overlapped by vintage ones of the same location. This can mean holding up an old childhood photograph in front of the same spot, or collaging archived photos with your own new images. No matter the style of layering, the result is the same: a quirky, intriguing look at the way the world has changed and remained the same.

Happy Thanksgiving to you! Much of my family (and a friend woot!) has gathered to celebrate by overeating lots of home-cooked goodies my mother and I have been preparing for more than a week (no lie). I found these vintage pictures of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on NYPL's online archives and went a little swoon-y for them. How fantastic are the vintage balloons?

I only attended a private school for one year, but it was also the high school I graduated from. It was a private, Catholic all girls school in Hawaii; I won't share the name, but anyone with some familiarity with Oahu (or search engine skills) should be able to deduce the school. It was quite the experience. I had been going to co-ed, uniform-less public schools for all the years prior and I'm not Catholic, but it ended up being a fantastic year and I met a lot of amazing girls.

Whenever I have too much time on my hands I like to browse the online NYPL archives. There is a plethora of great vintage photos, artwork, and even music sheets available for inquiring minds. These illustrations are from the Gazette du Bon Ton and are all by Pierre Brissaud. The Gazette was a leading fashion magazine that was published between 1912 and 1925. It was a very elist (and expensive) magazine; I find it ironic how many pages from it we can now access online for free...
