An American In Greece

It's interesting how our style is affected by our culture--or our perceptions of the styles of other countries being affected of our ideas of their culture/country. Too abstract? Here's an example:

I often get mistaken as...well almost anything but an American. One night in Japan I remember an old man came up to me and started asking me where I was from; he asked by naming random countries. He went through most of Europe and never touched on America. From what I have gathered from other individuals I have met this is a fairly common misconception--apparently my style doesn't scream American.
To stereotype, I assume this is because I don't wear flip flops (if avoidable), I'm not tan or blonde, and jeans aren't my staple. But really, while jeans are an American classic, not every American dresses like that or looks like that.
The same principle applies to other countries. Aren't all French minimalist, chic individuals who wear a lot of black? And doesn't everyone in London love a quirky mix of layers and eccentricity? Plus, no Japanese girl worth her soy sauce would wear an outfit that couldn't be termed "kawaii!"
While it is clear that these generalizations leave much of any population out, what about how our nationality does affect our style? While my clothes might not scream "American" in a stereotypical manner, being raised for most of my life in the United States has definitely affected my style. On a practical level most of the shops I have access to are American, meaning the clothes will be American made and designed (or at least tailored to the desires of a US American audience). My daily sensory inspiration that I would see around me would be American; also my family is thoroughly US American. In addition, most of my unreachable style icons (starlets like Kirsten Dunst for example) are either US American or at the very least Hollywood tainted.
Of course, being a blogger and clearly spending a great deal of time online my inspirations and icons have shifted from when I was younger and I now fish from a much larger more international pool.
Still the point remains, while I might not appear stereotypically US American to an outside eye and I loathe the idea of labeling any style as tied to a nationality, what can I be other than wholly American?

The Labbit Chronicles Continue

The bright-eyed amongst you might have spied her perched on my lap in the last post and guessed this was coming--Nasha once again slipped out of the cage and has seen a bit more of the world. The ferry to the island moved a bit slow for the ever impatient Labbit, but the island itself was just her speed. There was plenty of hiking, swimming, riding, and diving to keep her occupied during the daylight hours. As ever, she demanded portraits of herself to be taken upon nearly every leg of the journey and stole my sunglasses on more than one occasion...

Santo-freakin-rini

Santorini was not what I expected--but the weekend was much more rather than less of my imaginings. We leapt off our overnight ferry early Friday morning and into the arms of a friendly man from our hotel. From there we were whisked off on a tour that took us from the highest point in Santorini, to a hike on the volcano, to leaping from a boat into natural hot springs, to a sunset in Oia--with oh-so-much in between.
We struck out in independence the next morning--renting our own transportation in the form of four-wheelers. Our group numbered eight and comfortably situated on four atvs we were a caravan criss-crossing the island with speed and a sense of adventure. Much of our time was spent beach hopping from black sand expanses to red sand majesty.
Now I am back in my apartment in Athens with rosy skin and so many pictures to fill my days with delight for some time to come. It was a weekend decidedly more about what I was doing rather than what I was wearing--which is fine by me.

In Search of Wa

It's terribly bratty of me to be thinking about my study abroad in Japan with nostalgia when I am currently studying in Greece. However, when Japanese keeps popping out of my mouth when I'm try to pratice Greek or German and odious comparisons between my friends there and here keep arising, it really can't be helped. This editorial from foto_decadent isn't helping things either. I love the composition and color and it really captures some of the stillness one can feel in certain places in Japan.
//EDIT:// Thank you to Lisa (from Leese Looks) for being the first to correct and inform me; this redhead snapped by Garance Dore is Taylor Tomasi the Head of Accessories at Teen Vogue. P.S. She's still blowing me away and I love her outfits. :)

Food For Your Thoughts

I think I'm going to roll out of Athens weighing twice as much as I did when I first came and if so, the culprit will definitely be Leonidas chocolates. I walk past the store every day on the way to class and nearly every day I stop in to try a different treat and pilfer from the sample dish. Lately, I seem live off a diet of white chocolate and fruit--my roommates might be getting concerned...

Everyone really liked my headphones from the last outfit post and they certainly cause a stir whenever I wear them! They are from Japan and I can't remember the name of the store. But if you're every in 4 Pla in Sapporo and you run across a store that screams "super kawaii!" you will find those headphones as well as other variations including some with giant gems...

You're wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way...

To me, dialogue in old movies really seperates them from their modern descendents. While today we might have more "realistic" speech on screen, in older films not a single line was wasted and we are often kept bemused by rapid one-liners and witty deliveries. If you really want to catch an old film that epitomizes this style--look no further than one involving a newspaper reporter. These fiends would talk so fast on screen it became pretty clear that they were both interviewer and interviewee when it came to a story they wanted.

In "His Girl Friday," Cary Grant uses all of his wiles to lure ex-wife Rosalind Russell away from her new fiance and back to the life of a newspaper reporter. When faced with the scoop of a lifetime Russell must decide between her love of a story and the new love in her life. The entire film is filled with fast talk and if your head is spinning: Cary Grant has always been easy on the eyes...

Grecian Style

Several people have asked me about the style in Greece and well, I haven't answered them really. It's hard for me to answer these questions because I am not an authority, merely an outsider looking in. Also, can one really summarize any nation's "style" when at the end of the day we are all individuals. Other than I believe that Greeks dress better than Americans (I only see flip flops on my fellow foreign students), I can't really explain or describe differences. There is a street fashion site for Athens, called AthensWears--so perhaps those who are interested can seek more information there. No promises, but I will try to vocalize what I think style differences might be towards the end of my trip and perhaps throw in a couple of sneakily taken "street fashion" pics.

Seasonal Splendor

I sit here in my little apartment, the glass door leading to my balcony is standing open to allow the balmy, breeze and sounds from the street filter up to my room. It is warm and sunny and sense of time and seasons are fading from my conscious. I am aware that if I were in the States right now I would be visually assaulted with the holiday advertisements that are in full swing this time of year--in fact before I left I witnessed Halloween and Thanksgiving items creep their way onto the shelves and tasted a few too many Candy Korn flavored Hershey Kisses to feel entirely well...

This tends to be my favorite time of year, not for the weather, but for all the silly little excuses to celebrate. Only the Internet, really keeps me connected to a wider world of activity and occasions.
Thanks to Facehunter, I am longing for a fur hat (and the appropriate weather to wear it in). Last year, I went in a bit of a tizzy searching for vintage hats on eBay and ended up with this haul. Instead of avoiding bidding wars by purchasing hats in the summer, I of course wait again until the season is nigh...
Krisatomic always delights me with her posts, but these sketches in preparation for her Christmas cards are especially endearing at the moment. She makes me want to pull out a pen and get to drawing myself, whilst sucking on a candy cane.

Our Private Escape

I just spent the most delightful weekend in Aegina; a small island a short ferry ride away from Athens. We found excellent prices and often felt as if the island was there only for us since tourist season is now over. From being picked up in town by wedding guests staying at the same hotel at us, to diving from a private swimming spot into crystal waters, and getting free desserts from tavernas on the water, the weekend was blissful and filled with small, sweet surprises.

We tried new foods, leapt from rocky heights into the sea, and smiled at old Greek women who babbled at us incoherently without caring that we could not understand. It was far too soon when with slightly lighter pockets we had to board the ferry again and depart. We took with us small gifts, pictures, and rosier skin to remind us of the brief time that passed there.
