Detail Of The Week: Doctor Bag

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, ombre purse, doctor bag, spotted moth
I'm quite the purse lady, so it should be no surprise that I acquired yet another one: this ombre doctor bag. I love the mix of old and new in this bag. The shape is so classic, a retro throwback even, but the ombre coloring is so fresh and modern. Combined it was a bag I really wanted to get my mitts on and thankfully my sponsor Spotted Moth was kind enough to send me one. It's quite my ideal size; big enough to fit my camera, a book, and other essentials, but not so large that I feel like I'm carrying a duffle around.the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, ombre purse, doctor bag, spotted moth

Plaid Remix

I haven't featured a remix in awhile, so I finally got to putting some images together. There's been a ton of remixes recently (especially after living in a suitcase for nearly 3 months), so I guess I'm rather tired of the entire idea at the moment. Despite owning this dress for ages and having worn it more times than I can count, it is still one of my favorites to return to. Here are just a few of the ways I've worn it recently.

Bringing Up Baby

Bringing Up BabyI'm suggesting this film now because my past two suggestions have been rather heavy and with rather sad, emotional endings. So, to prove to you that I don't need a major character to commit suicide or sink into madness to enjoy a film: I bring you one of my favorite comedies Bringing Up Baby. This film was expected to do well in theaters, but ended up with a really low box office performance. It's surprising because it is Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn at their best comedic game and is now considered a classic. Although, a lot of iconic films now didn't do well in theaters and a number that have performed to high box offices fade quickly from the collective conscience...

It's a fast-pace, screwball comedy and artfully plays Hepburn and Grant against their "type." Like many great comedies then and now, a lot of the story and characters was improvised on set and a collaboration between the cast and director (Howard Hawks). The story is rather difficult to sum up briefly, but basically is: paleontologist David has the misfortune of meeting insanity-in-heels-and-a-evening-dress Susan and gets roped into aiding her with her new pet leopard named Baby. What follows is a series of mishaps that just won't stop for David who is the only sane person in an insane movie. For all the slapstick silliness of the film, the dialogue is spot-on, clever, and quick. (Since this is a fashion blog: the film isn't about wardrobe or style, but the evening and day elegance of all the characters is inspiring; Katharine Hepburn dons an especially stunning, svelte number with a veil for an evening out.)
Fans of old movie animals will appreciate that the dog (George) in the film is the same that played Asta in The Thin Man series and played alongside Grant another time in The Awful Truth (lucky dog, eh?).

She Hid Around Corners

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, leather jacket, floral dress, black tights, ocean
I spent over an hour perched on the rocks watching the waves crash around me and feeling the warm sun on my back. Even though the weather has cooled off dramatically and with the wind blowing it feels downright brisk, I still find myself escaping outside. A secluded beach is the perfect spot to sit and contemplate...everything, or to think of nothing but the waves beating against the shore. I do hypothesize that even in the winter months I will be seated on these rocks escaping all other distractions.

Waving Woods And Waters Wild Do Hum An Autumn Sound

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, editorial"Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn an autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them --
The summer flowers depart --
Sit still -- as all transform'd to stone,
Except your musing heart.
How there you sat in summer-time,
May yet be in your mind;
And how you heard the green woods sing
Beneath the freshening wind.
Though the same wind now blows around,
You would its blast recall;
For every breath that stirs the trees,
Doth cause a leaf to fall."

Only One Is A Wanderer

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, lavintage, vintage, retro, green coat, harlequin dress

The temperatures dipped below the 80s and I was so excited to wear my new-to-me vintage coat I just received from my sponsor LAVintage. It's the most fantastic shade of green and has the greatest shape (I'm also pleased with the quality and speediness of delivery). They always make coats in the winter inspired by vintage ones, so it definitely makes sense to just get something that has already stood the test of time.
This coat just reminded me so much of Hitchcock heroines that I ended up wearing more vintage pieces that I have in a long time. Usually when I wear vintage I like to only wear one or two pieces at a time to prevent an outfit from looking too much like a costume, however this time I couldn't really resist. Although, I think with the coat buttoned up I come across more Hitchcock heroine's child than an actual adult...

Pay My Losses And Take New Chances

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, black dress, sailor, tourjours toi, family affairs, mariasusa, ballet flatsSo, this might sound crazy, but this outfit reminds me of the bathing costumes from the early 1900s. The bike shorts really drove the similarity home for me, but I don't mind the comparison--it's fun to pull inspiration from random places and this outfit is ridiculously comfy.
The weather here still hasn't quite caught up with fall yet--and that's not quite a complaint. This long balmy end-of-summerness is actually reminding me of Hawaii and making me want to live there again. However, I do have a number of coats that I'm dying to wear...perhaps we'll just crank up the air conditioning (so strange to live in a house that has this again) and have an igloo party!the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, black dress, sailor, tourjours toi, family affairs, mariasusa, ballet flatsthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, black dress, sailor, tourjours toi, family affairs, mariasusa, ballet flatsthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, black dress, sailor, tourjours toi, family affairs, mariasusa, ballet flatsthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, retro, vintage, black dress, sailor, tourjours toi, family affairs, mariasusa, ballet flats

Merry Band Of Misfits

the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, gemma correll
I'm not much a cat person, but I feel like all of the artists and bloggers I enjoy lately are (young) cat ladies. One brilliant example are the endearing illustrations by Gemma Correll of red-cheeked misfits and their merry, sometimes talkative pets. In the world of Gemma's artwork dinosaurs have cook-outs and dogs are dapper.the clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, gemma correllthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, gemma correllthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, gemma correllthe clothes horse, theclotheshorse, fashion, style, gemma correll

Defining Personal Style?

I recently received The ELLEments of Personal Style: 25 Modern Fashion Icons On How To Dress, Shop, And Live and I'll admit I was a bit skeptical. I've been disappointed in the past with "fashion-y" books that promise inspiration and guidance; they usually end up being light on quality content visually and text-wise (they rarely seem to offer new or thoughtful advice). Even upon opening this book I fell upon the piece about Ashley Greene and wondered when she earned the title of style icon...

However, despite all skepticism and initial judgement I eventually found myself reading entertaining pieces on Dita Von Teese, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Janie Bryant (Mad Men costume designer). I enjoyed the set-up of each feature: it began with a little background, followed by an interview, and plenty of examples of their style. The photographs in this book are really special; many are taken in the "icons" homes and closets giving us an intimate peak into their world. These images also serve to illustrate that style isn't just clothes on your back; it is reflected in how you live: what you choose to hang on your wall, how you arrange the books on your shelves, etc.
I still would prefer some of my style icons to be in the book (like Sofia Coppola or Anna Dello Russo), but that might be more personal preference than a proper critique. The style icons they did choose show a great range of style, backgrounds, occupations, even sizes, making the statement "you don't have to fit a mold to be stylish." Overall, I did enjoy the book and will definitely be returning to it for inspiration from time to time.

We Caught A Glimpse Of All We Missed

So, as you can see in these pictures the ends of my hair are a new color. I wanted mermaid hair, so I dyed them blue at home...however, I didn't want to damage my hair so I didn't use bleach and I used RAW dye. The result is the blue is quite subtly blue and mostly just looks black from a distance. I knew it wouldn't be exactly how I wanted it without bleach, but I had hoped it would look blue! Quite disappointing! However, I'm still excited I did it at all and I might make the bleach plunge soon...afterall my hair is long enough I can just cut off the ends.
In other news, the weekend was a total pumpkin explosion! We ate pumpkin in every possible form: baked pumpkin seeds, pumpkin cookies, chocolate chip pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie...well you get the idea. We even carved up a few pumpkins and I finally went to a little pumpkin patch and stand, which of course meant getting a few obligatory photos.
